The short answer

.ai domains cost more for two structural reasons: .ai is the country-code domain (ccTLD) of Anguilla, whose registry sets a high wholesale price, and it requires a minimum two-year registration — so you pay for two years upfront. As of the March 5, 2026 increase, the wholesale price is $80/year ($160 per two-year term), before any registrar markup. Sustained demand from AI companies keeps retail prices firm.

Why .ai domains are expensive

“.ai” was never designed as an “artificial intelligence” domain. It is the official ccTLD of Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean, and registrations have been possible since 1995 — long before the AI boom. The industry adopted it as a domain hack because the letters spell “AI.”

  • A high wholesale price. The registry (backend operated by Identity Digital) raised its price to $80/year effective March 5, 2026, up from $70. Registrars pay this and add a markup.
  • The two-year minimum. You can't register a .ai for a single year — the minimum term is two years, effectively doubling the entry cost versus a one-year .com.
  • AI-startup demand. The extension became a status signal for AI products, supporting premium pricing and an active resale market.
  • Scarcity at the short end. Most one-, two-, and three-character names are gone, pushing buyers toward premium or aftermarket names.

How much does a .ai domain cost?

There's no single price. Retail = registry wholesale ($80/yr) + the registrar's markup + optional add-ons. Because of the two-year minimum, compare the all-in two-year cost and the ongoing renewal, not just the headline first year.

First year / registrationRenewal
Registry wholesale$80 / year (from Mar 5, 2026)$80 / year
Typical mainstream first year~$75 – $160~$75 – $160/yr
Wider market range (100+ registrars)~$74.95 – $451.26varies widely
Two-year minimum applies≈ 2× the annual figure at checkout

Is a .ai domain worth it?

It depends on positioning. A .ai is worth it when AI is genuinely central to what you're building — it's an instant signal, more short names are still available than on .com, and it carries no SEO penalty (Google treats TLDs neutrally). It's a weaker choice if you sell mainly to mainstream audiences (where .com is the reflex), if AI is only a passing feature, or if a tight budget makes the higher cost and two-year commitment hard to justify. Many teams also register the matching .com defensively.

Questions
The registry mandates a two-year minimum term, which raises the upfront cost versus one-year TLDs.
